Observation Narrative
Plot documents a small patch of mesic upland forest on a gentle upland bordering swamps of the North Landing River near Land of Promise. Currently, two very large individuals of Quercus pagoda dominate the canopy, along with some Fagus grandifolia, Quercus nigra, and Acer rubrum. However, the forest has two canopy gaps from blow-downs, which has stimulated very dense, shrubby regeneration of Ostrya virginiana. In addition to Ostrya, the shrub layer contains significant cover by Ilex opaca, Stewartia malacodendron, and Symplocos tinctoria.
